  • The most suitable climate for cabbage cultivation is temperate-humid; it tolerates cold but is very sensitive to frost.

Cabbage reproduces through seeds. Before sowing, the soil must be deeply worked and well fertilized with mature manure. Sowing is done in seedbeds, with the timing varying according to the cabbage variety: early varieties are sown in August and September, late varieties in April and May, and very late varieties from January to May. When the seedlings reach about twenty centimeters in height and have developed four leaves, usually a little over a month after sowing, they are ready to be transplanted, maintaining a distance of about fifty centimeters between plants and sixty centimeters between rows.

The cabbage harvest is carried out at different times depending on the variety, sowing, and transplanting period. This operation involves cutting the cabbage head once it has reached an adequate size for the variety. Cabbage can be stored in the refrigerator at a temperature of four to five degrees Celsius, taking care to keep the head wrapped in the largest outer leaves.

    Watering/Fertilization

Cabbage requires constant and abundant watering, especially during hot and dry periods. Care must always be taken to avoid waterlogging.

Fertilization is also very important for the proper and healthy development of savoy cabbage. Before planting, the soil should be fertilized with mature manure or dry fertilizer applied once a month. After transplanting, it is advisable to apply a fertilization based on brown algae combined with dried blood.

    Soil type

Cabbage requires medium-textured soil, rich in organic matter, loose, and very well drained. Before sowing, it must be deeply worked.
