- Chickpea is an annual plant with a deep branched root (up to 1.20 m), which makes it very resistant in dry soils
- Throughout the Mediterranean basin, chickpeas are sown in late winter and harvested in July-August
- It is a very hardy plant, suitable for hot-arid climates, as it withstands drought very well but does not tolerate excessive humidity
- The most suitable soils are medium-textured or light, provided they are deep, where chickpeas can fully express their characteristic drought resistance;
- Chickpeas are traditionally harvested by uprooting the plants by hand and allowing them to complete drying in the field in sheaves. A well-managed chickpea crop can produce over 2-3 t/ha of grain
